hopniss (HOP-nis) - n., the American groundnut (Apios americana), a perennial vine with edible tubers native to eastern North America.

Tastes like a slightly nutty potato. The seeds are also edible, but I know nothing about them. It is one of the staples that enabled the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony survive its first few years. Today, it is cultivated only in Japan, of all places. The name is from the Unami (Southern Lenape) name for it, hopënis, which in modern Unami is now used for potato.
