Dictionaries, when they have this at all, show much confusion and even doubt as to whether it's a real word. It's possible to find real citations, even outside of 19th century papers on conchology, including a translation of Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. According to one, it's from American Spanish, but that's as far as my trail goes.
