sillage (see-TAZH) - n., the degree to which a fragrance lingers in the air.


Not to be confused with silage, which is fodder stored in a silo, and indeed sillage is more commonly given in dictionaries as simply an alternate spelling of silage. But it is also in its own right a technical term from perfumery. As you might guess from the pronunciation, it comes from French, where it originally meant the wake of a boat or a trail.
