abutilon (uh-BYOOT-i-lon) - n., any of about 200 species of tropical and subtropical shrubs and trees (genus Abultion) with showy bell-shaped white, yellow, or red flowers.

Also called flowering maples (they can have similar leaves), Indian mallow, and veltvetleaf, and includes some rather nice ornamental plants. Name is from New Latin, from Arabic ’abū-ṭīlūn, ultimately via Syriac from Greek arkion, burdock.
