bradawl (BRAD-awl) - n., an awl with chisel edge used to make holes for brads or screws.

Has a handle like a screwdriver's. If you need to make a deep hole, use a drill, but for shallow or starter holes, this will do the trick. The name dates from around 1820, and comes from being an awl used for brads.
