curassow

curassow (KYOOR-uh-soh, kyoo-RAS-oh) - n., any of several long-tailed, crested South and Central American gallinaceous game birds (subfamily Cracinae).


About 16 species in 3 genera, mostly closely related to pheasants and chickens. The name, according to dictionaries, is an alteration of CuraƧao, presumably meaning the island off Venezuela rather than the liqueur, but I'm not readily finding which species, if any, live there. This one is the yellow-knobbed curassow (Crax daubentoni):
