tutelary (TOOT-l-er-ee, TYOOT-l-er-ee) - adj., having guardianship of a person, place, or thing; of or relating to a guardian.

Also, as a noun, such a protector. Deity is a common noun described by tutelary, a god or similar spirit that protects (especially) a place. Adopted around 1610 from Latin tūtēlārius, guardian, from tūtēla, tutelage, which has come to mean a sense of teaching (thus tutor) but originally had the guardianship sense.
