demonifuge
Jun. 10th, 2021 07:39 amdemonifuge (de-MON-uh-fyoodj) - n., something that drives away or protects against demons or evil spirits.
Not common -- it shows up only in a couple dictionaries. Coined in the mid-18th century by religious writer and translator Thomas Hartley from Latin daemōn, demon + -fuge, suffix meaning driving away, from Latin fugere, flee. (I never noticed before that the English -fuge suffix means the opposite of its Latin root. Weird.)
