chanterelle (shan-tuh-REL, chan-tuh-REL) - n., an edible, yellow-to-orange, trumpet-shaped mushroom (Cantharellus cibarius); any of various similar mushrooms of the genera Cantharellus, Craterellus, Gomphus, and Polyozellus, several of which are inedible or poisonous.

Name was taken in 1777 from French, from New Latin cantharella, feminine diminutive of Latin cantharus, a type of large drinking cup (from its shape), from Greek kantharos, of unknown origin.
