kerfuffle (ker-FUHF-uhl) - n., a fuss, a commotion.
My favorite word for an uproar. Largely British, according to dictionaries, but I hear it here in the States enough to think that's a dated usage note. Origin is Scots curfuffle (until the 1950s the English word had a variety of spellings including cu-, cur-, ge-, ka-, and kur-) from cur-, wrong/awkward (from Scots Gaelic car, to twist/turn) + fuffle, to disorder/confuse, probably of imitative origin.
And that's the week of uproars -- back next week with the usual huddle-muddle of lexemes.
