kowari - n., a small carnivorous rat-like desert marsupial (Dasyuroides byrnei) of north-eastern South Australia and south-western Queensland.

Name is from an Australian Aboriginal language, probably Diyari, where its name is usually spelled kariri -- it's also called brush-tailed marsupial rat, bushy-tailed marsupial rat, and Kayer rat.
