velocera - n., a three-masted Italian coasting vessel.

That is, one used to ship goods and passengers between coastal towns without going out into the deep water. I'm not finding much about this type of ship, but did dig up this illustration:

silouette of a velocera

I'm posting this despite paucity of information because of the name, which is clearly related to Italian veloce, rapid/speedy, from Latin vēlōx, quick, (from PIE *weǵʰ-, to bring/transport) which is also the root of velocity.

And that wraps up a week of mostly Mediterranean ships. Back with the usual mix next week.
