confabulation
Apr. 12th, 2023 07:20 amconfabulation (kuhn-fab-yuh-LAY-shuhn) - n., (general) a discussion, conversation, chat; (psych.) the replacement of a gap in memory with a fabrication a person believes is true.
Large Language Model (LLM) AIs are also prone to confabulation, sometimes called hallucinations, and Wikipedia has a whole article on just that sense. (Fun fact: if you tweak parameters of current LLMs to limit confabulation, you also limit the output's creativity and that quality that makes it not feel mechanical.) The divergence of the two main senses goes back to the root, Latin fābula, meaning both a conversation and a story (fable). First appeared around 1600.
