gumption - n., boldness, courage, spunk, initiative.


Originally, commonsense, shrewdness, in Scottish dialect, but I've never heard it used that way. Possibly connected to Middle English gome, attention, heed. In the original sense, attested since 1719; in the sense of drive, initiative, since 1812.
