calamary (KAL-uh-mer-ee) - n., squid.
A now dated name for squids in general, distinct from squids as food, which we call calamari, but also specifically current names in Australia/New Zealand for two species of reef squid (genus Sepioteuthis), the southern calamary and northern calamary. I should footnote that statement that calamari is distinct, as that term comes from the same root as this: Late Latin calamÄrius, ink-case, referring to the ink that they squirt -- the animal directly from that, the food via Italian. Here's two hours of northern calamary chilling to lofi hiphop:
You're welcome.
