paigle (PAY-guhl) - n., (obs. or dial.) any of a few species of primroses including cowslip (Primula veris) and oxlip (P. elatior).

The origin of the name is unknown, attested from the 16th century. The names cowslip and oxlip (= ox + slip) come from growing in boggy fields, such as used as cattle pastures and which are slippery.

(That ended up being less interesting than I expected. Ah, well.)
