ekphrasis or ecphrasis (ek-FRUH-sis) - n., a literary response to or description of another work of art, especially a visual art.

The classic types being descriptions of paintings or sculpture or even pottery, but the device dates back to at least Homer, with the description of the art on Achilles's shield (bonus beats). The word also dates back to Ancient Greek ékphrasis, description (from ek, a special form of ex-, out + phrázō, tell/explain.
