poggle - n., (UK, Ind.) (obs.) a fool, an eccentric, an idiot. adj., (Ind.) (obs.) eccentric, crazy.
In India, the alternate spelling paugul was also used -- "was" because this pretty much died out in the first half of the 20th century, having been used since the 1820s. It's almost certainly from Hindi, but Green's is having trouble rendering the supposed source, and other dictionaries don't identify the word at all.
ETA: hat tip to
octahedrite who found the Hindi source.
Bonus word: plug-ugly, also pug-ugly (which what I thought the word was)
---L.
