standish (STAN-dish) - n., a stand for ink, pens, and other writing materials.
A bit dated, since as a rule we no longer have to dip our pens, so no longer want an object to organize pen + ink-well + possibly a pen-knife to sharpen quills, and so on. This probably counts as an obsolete word, actually -- I can't recall ever seeing it till I chanced upon it in a novel from a hundred years ago. The origin is unclear -- is it a stand + dish for ink? a sort (-ish) of stand? -- but it's been around since the mid-15th century, with an even greater variety of spelling than usual for the time (some of them ending in /if/ instead of /ish/).
