snood (SNOOD) - n., a band or ribbon for keeping the hair in place, esp. the hair-band formerly worn in Scotland and northern England by young unmarried women; a net or fabric bag pinned or tied on at the back of a woman's head for holding the hair; a flap of pendulous skin over the beak of a turkey.

The first type is the original meaning of headband, used since before 900 as Old English snōd, from Proto-Germanic *snōdō, rope/string, from Proto-Indo-European *snoh₁téh₂, yarn/thread, from *sneh₁(i)-, to twist/wind/weave.
