Both physically and in written or spoken text. This one is not certain, as we lack direct evidence for the Middle English form *ramlen or *ramelen, but it is probably a frequentive of ramen/romen, to roam, with a vowel change and shift of /mm/ to /mb/, possibly by an intermediate dialect form.
