The word sounds like it has to do with something undesirable, with that -crude- in the middle -- and indeed, the two are from the same root: Latin crūdus, raw/bloody/undigested, though the shift to an idea of becoming worse was already there in Latin crūdēscō, even before they stuck an re-, again, in front, turned it into the verb recrūdēscere, and derived an adjective from the present participle recrūdēscēns.
