Also a few extended senses, including a word or expression accepted as another name for something (which has another name, metonym), in biology one of two or more scientific names applied to a single taxon, and in computing alias or alternate name for a table, view, or other database object -- but since this week is about words about words, I'm only giving the word sense in the main definition. Synonyms often have not identical but rather overlapping meanings -- consider forest and wood -- which makes them tricky for foreign language learners.
