Theme week! Words that exist in both English and Icelandic. Starting with the obvious:


fjord - n., a long, narrow arm of the sea bordered by steep cliffs.


Being a bay usually formed by glacial erosion. In Icelandic, it's fjörður. From Norwegian fiord, from Old Norse fjörðr, from North Germanic *ferthuz, from the PIE root *prtus, from *por-, going, passage -- thus making it a deep cognate of port.
