plicate (PLAI-kayt) - adj., folded lengthwise several times like a fan, pleated. v., to fold or pleat.
Mostly used in biology and medicine, especially botany -- thus the plicate form of a palm frond. This form develops (or is formed during surgery) because it stiffens the structure. From Latin plicātus, perfect passive participle of plicō, to fold.
