Also known as wolfberry, though that word also is applied other plants of genus Lycium (which are also known as boxthorn and matrimony vine) as well as the unrelated western snowberry (Symphoricarpos occidentalis), a shrub native to North America. This was pretty much unknown outside of China and the Chinese diaspora until a commercial push was made in around 2000, promoting it as a health food. The name is apparently a deliberate alteration, made in China, of Beijing Mandarin gǒuqǐ (枸杞), which is specifically L. barbarum.
