kilter (KIL-ter) - n., good condition, form, or order.


Most commonly seen in the negative form "out of kilter," but you can also find phrases like "bring back into kilter." The alternate form kelter was primarily UK-only and is not seen much these days, but this was the original spelling. Where that came from, though, is subject to much speculation but little conclusion, making it origin unknown.

Huh, I always thought

kilter = balance

eg off-kilter = off-balance, either literally or metaphorically

This was my intuition as well. I wonder if we're being influenced by the sound-similarity to "tilt"? It's interesting how the nuances of meaning can be nudged in different directions by subconscious impressions like that.
