fraktur - a German style of blackletter typefaces.


So-called because many letterforms include broken (fractured) lines. In use from the 17th through early 20th century. See Wikipedia for descriptions of the various blackletter faces, with examples for comparison.

I did. I knew about some of it, at least the resolution, but not the historical roots of it.

"More readable"? Reminds me of sans serif debates.
