kae - n., another name for the European jay (Garrulus glandarius).

Also now known as the Eurasian jay. I'm not finding much on this name, though, especially not origin.

Possibly the "Eurasian jay" name came into use around the time it was changed from a Corvus to a Garrulus. The kae name is suspiciously close to kaie (jackdaw in Norwegian; a Corvus), a word with characteristically widespread Indo-Euproean relatives. There may be more conflation and confusion in the past.

Now that I think of it, the Arthurian Cei/Cai/Kay may also be related.

I suspect that kaie is a hint towards a Norse origin for this name.

Not sure what to make of the Kay connection. Any other evidence for that?
