spatchcock - n., a fowl that has been split down the back for grilling. v., to prepare and roast a fowl in such manner; to insert or interpolate, especially in a forced or incongruous manner.


The last being not quite the metaphor extension I expect. From the late 18th century, possibly an alteration of spitchcock, a similar method of preparing eels, itself of obscure Elizabethan origin.
