Back to a week of Words My True Love Gave Me. Yes, the little red bag still has some left -- less than half, at this point. Onward!

quango - n., a semi-autonomous organization funded by the government but supposedly operating independently from it.

Largely Commonwealth usage, but it'd be a useful term to have in the States. Originally a shortened quasi-NGO, but now more commonly spelled out as QUasi-Autonomous Non-Governmental Organization.

Definition or derivation?

Rort can be a noun or a verb. Originally Australian, it has migrated back to Britain and can be found regularly in the political and financial pages.

Def: Fraud or dishonesty, specifically with other people's money; implications of systematically exploiting (financial) rules for personal profit. Examples: a tax rort, a mortgage loan rort

Der: Allegedly from "rorty" (obs., jolly or merry) but I've never seen a reasonable list of citations for the transition in meaning.
