kobold - n., in German folklore, a goblin; specifically, a mischievous domestic spirit similar to a brownie or Robin Goodfellow, and a gnome that haunts mines and other underground places.


From Germanic roots meaning evil spirit. The element cobalt comes from kobold, because of its poisonous ores (which are usually arsenic salts). Hinzelmann was one of the first kind of kobold.
