nephology - n., the study of clouds and cloud formation.


An outdated term, having been commonly used in the 19th century but falling out of use by the mid-20th century. Clouds are still studied, of course, but those who do so are no longer called nephologists, alas. Coined from Greek roots: nephos, cloud + -ology.

My parents had a book about short-term weather prediction by nephology. Didn't use the word, of course.
