tuatara - n., a large, nocturnal, lizard-like reptile, Sphenodon punctatum, of islands near the coast of New Zealand.


There are two species, and they are the only surviving members of the order Sphenodontia, which included the pleurosaurs. Yes, there are dinosaurs alive today. From Maori tua, back + tara, spine.
