chiffonade - n., green vegetables or herbs cut into long thin strips or shredded, used in soups, salads, et cet.


Looks like a fabric, but no -- or not quite: from French, from chiffoner, to crumple, from chiffon. While how you get from sheer fabric to crumpled is clear, how the word shifts between the two meanings is not.
