armoire - n., a large wardrobe or movable cupboard with doors and shelves.


So called because it was originally used to store arms (in the general sense of gear as well as weapons). In use in this form since 1571, taken from French armaire, from Latin armarium, from arma. Interestingly, the same word had been earlier (in the 14th century) borrowed as ambry.
