ansatz - n., (Math. & Phys.) an assumed form of a mathematical statement which is then verified by its results.


That is, one derived empirically rather than from first principals, which you then test against the data. Distinct from guesstimate, which more a value derived with incomplete information. From German Ansatz, approach or attempt.

In English, it's ansatzes.

Yeah, sorry 'bout that.

The German plural is ansätzen. Or rather, Ansätzen, since it's really Ansatz.

The second vowel is close to the a of ate, only with mouth narrower.
