deracinate - v., to pull up by the roots, uproot; displace from one's native environment.


Including the metaphoric extension, forced resettlement. The noun form is deracination. From French déraciner, from Old French desraciner, de-root, from Latin roots. This would make a pretty good name for an alterna-rock band, of the young & disaffected type.

I think "deracinated" was one of the standard anti-Semitic adjectives, like "cosmopolitan" in Russian -- these people don't belong anywhere.
