This is something of a theme week: words found in Reading the OED: One Man, One Year, 21,730 Pages by Ammon Shea. Or to put it anther way, words found in the OED by Ammon Shea. First up:

apricity - n., the warmth of the sun, esp. in winter.

I've no idea of the origin, but I'm amused to see that Webster called it rare in 1828, and everyone else since says it's obsolete. Pity, as feeling apricity in winter is worth the effort.

Sweet. One of my favorite sensations has a name! I am now the only LiveJournal user with a listed interest in apricity.
