ductus - n., the number of strokes that make up a written letter, and the direction, sequence and speed in which they are written.
There's also an anatomical meaning which we shall ignore for now. I want to say ductus is more important in Chinese than Latin calligraphy, but I'm sure penmanship experts would jump me for that.
