gowk - n., a fool, a simpleton; (Brit.) a cuckoo.


Prononced not gawk, but gouk or gohk. This is one of those old words, dating to at least 1300, but while there is an Old English cognate (geac) it seems instead to have come from Old Norse gaukr.
