exigency - n., a circumstance that makes urgent demands; also, the need, demand, or requirement intrinsic to a circumstance.


The former being the most common use. In use since the 1570s, derived from exigent, requiring immediate action, which was in used since the early 1400s, taken from Latin, where it's from exigere, to drive out, demand, from ex- + agere, to drive. Pronounced either EK-si-jehn-see or ig-ZI-jehn-see.
