plangent (PLAN-juhnt) - adj., resounding, esp. with a plaintive sound.


As a bell -- resonant and mournful together. A song of long-lost love can also be plangent. Coined in 1822 from the participle of Latin plangere, to beat, esp. the breast in lamentation.
