Jun. 2nd, 2011 07:06 ammajolica or maiolica (both either muh-JOL-i-kuh or muh-YOL-i-kuh) - n., a type of fine glazed earthenware from Italy, coated with opaque tin-based white enamel and ornamented with metallic colors.
Also, a few later types of imitative earthenware. Borrowed, with the arrival of the stuff in England, around 1550 from Italian maiolica, from Medieval Latin MÄjorica -- Majorca being the route of import into Italy of the style from Valencia.
