majolica or maiolica (both either muh-JOL-i-kuh or muh-YOL-i-kuh) - n., a type of fine glazed earthenware from Italy, coated with opaque tin-based white enamel and ornamented with metallic colors.


Also, a few later types of imitative earthenware. Borrowed, with the arrival of the stuff in England, around 1550 from Italian maiolica, from Medieval Latin Mājorica -- Majorca being the route of import into Italy of the style from Valencia.
