interoception / exteroception
Mar. 15th, 2013 07:22 aminteroception - n., sensitivity to stimuli originating inside of the body.
exteroception - n., sensitivity to stimuli originating outside of the body.
Both to be contrasted with proprioception, which is an awareness of one's self, of the relative positions of one's limbs, and so on -- which are intrinsic to oneself rather than stimuli. Interoception is what gives us the ability to feel pain, notice we're hungry, and so on, while exteroception keeps us from walking into things and so feeling pain.
And that successfully wraps up this week of pairs -- back next week with regular mix.
