exteroception - n., sensitivity to stimuli originating outside of the body.
Both to be contrasted with proprioception, which is an awareness of one's self, of the relative positions of one's limbs, and so on -- which are intrinsic to oneself rather than stimuli. Interoception is what gives us the ability to feel pain, notice we're hungry, and so on, while exteroception keeps us from walking into things and so feeling pain.
