Usually accompanies a type of high-flown pretentiousness. Most likely to be found in historical novels (though not, thanks to their habitual anachronisms, historical romances) but also some older fantasies. The term was coined by Robert Louis Stevenson to describe the type of writing in which characters say, "Tush, tush!" Compare forsoothery.
