pentimento
Jul. 24th, 2015 07:59 ampentimento (pen-tuh-MEN-toh) - n., visible traces of earlier forms or images made visible when a newer layer of paint turns translucent with age.
Especially, places where the painter revised the work, changing their mind. Not limited to painting -- metaphoric uses are common (insofar as the word is used). At the root is the Italian word for to repent, pentire, plus a nominalizing ending -- so a regret-ment, what the painter regretting doing in the first place. Or possibly the alteration was regretted?
