Especially, places where the painter revised the work, changing their mind. Not limited to painting -- metaphoric uses are common (insofar as the word is used). At the root is the Italian word for to repent, pentire, plus a nominalizing ending -- so a regret-ment, what the painter regretting doing in the first place. Or possibly the alteration was regretted?
